Small Business SEO Strategy, Audits and Implementation
Studio Von Terrible provides small business SEO services for businesses that want to understand how they are being found, what is getting in the way and where the next worthwhile search opportunities are hiding.
That might begin with an existing website that has never had a proper SEO strategy, a site whose Google rankings have stalled, a business appearing for the wrong searches, pages competing with each other, local visibility that needs attention or a perfectly respectable website sitting online wondering why nobody seems to find it.
I approach search engine optimisation as a business problem rather than a collection of mysterious tricks performed behind a curtain. First we work out what your customers search for, what Google currently understands about your business, where competitors are appearing and where useful opportunities exist. Then we decide what deserves attention.
SEO is not about chasing every possible ranking factor or assembling an enormous keyword list and hoping for the best. The point is greater search visibility, more relevant organic traffic and a website with a clear relationship between what people are searching for and the pages Google has available to show them.
SEO Audits and Search Visibility Analysis
For an existing website, the first job is often finding out what is already happening. An SEO audit looks at the website’s current search visibility, keyword performance, important pages, content, site structure, metadata, internal linking, indexing and technical SEO issues that affect how search engines crawl and understand the site.
I also look for gaps. Searches your customers make that the website does not answer properly. Services buried inside broader pages. Useful subjects with nowhere sensible to land. Pages targeting the same thing. Local search opportunities the site barely mentions. Content Google has indexed but appears unsure what to do with.
The audit also considers how the website behaves as a whole. A page rarely exists in isolation. Navigation, internal links, page hierarchy, mobile friendliness, page speed and the pathways between related subjects all influence how useful a website is to people and how clearly its structure is communicated to search engines.
The result is not a ceremonial document full of alarming graphs and incomprehensible acronyms. You get a clear explanation of what I found, what matters, what I would change and what deserves priority.
If the problems extend beyond SEO and into the structure, content or functionality of the existing website, some recommendations are better handled through Website Growth rather than endlessly patching individual pages.
Keyword Research, Keyword Mapping and Competitor SEO Research
SEO keyword research is about understanding the language real people use when looking for businesses, services, products and information like yours. Search volume matters, but so do relevance, search intent, competition and whether ranking for a phrase would bring the right person through the door.
That includes obvious high-volume searches and more specific long-tail keywords. A smaller, highly relevant search made by somebody looking for precisely what your business offers is often far more interesting than a giant keyword attracting people who have no intention of becoming customers.
I research keyword opportunities alongside the existing website, Google search results and competing businesses to identify where your site already has traction, where competitors are stronger and where there is useful territory still worth pursuing. Competitor SEO research is not about blindly copying whichever business currently ranks first. It helps expose patterns, gaps and opportunities that we can investigate properly.
From there, keywords need somewhere logical to live. Keyword mapping assigns important search themes to the right pages so the website develops clear territory instead of six pages elbowing each other out of Google’s way.
That mapping also helps shape an SEO content strategy. Sometimes the answer is improving an existing page. Sometimes research exposes a service, question, subject or search intent deserving a page of its own.
On-Page SEO Implementation
An SEO report tells you what needs attention. SEO implementation is where we roll up our sleeves and do something about it.
If you want Studio Von Terrible to carry out the recommendations, implementation is quoted according to the work required. That might include rewriting or expanding SEO content, improving headings and page structure, updating title tags and meta descriptions, strengthening internal links, improving image filenames and alt text, refining keyword targeting, correcting indexing issues, adding appropriate structured data or building new search-focused pages where a genuine opportunity exists.
I also review how individual pages relate to one another. Good on-page SEO should make each important page’s purpose obvious to customers and search engines while reducing unnecessary keyword cannibalisation across the website.
If research identifies an important topic, service or search intent with nowhere suitable to land, implementation might also involve a new page or landing page. Those larger additions sit naturally alongside Website Growth, where new website territory is planned and built properly rather than wedged awkwardly into an unrelated page.
If the website itself has reached the point where fixing individual SEO problems is less sensible than rebuilding the foundations, Website Development is where we look at the bigger problem.
Local SEO for Mornington Peninsula and Victorian Businesses
For businesses serving a defined area, local SEO and local search optimisation help search engines understand what the business does, where it operates and which local searches it is relevant to.
Studio Von Terrible is based on the Mornington Peninsula, so local SEO strategy is particularly relevant to businesses throughout Mornington, Frankston and Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs, as well as businesses serving Phillip Island, Gippsland and other parts of Victoria.
Depending on the business, local SEO work might involve geographic keyword research, website content, service-area signals, location relevance, internal structure and alignment between the website and the business information Google sees elsewhere online, including its Google Business Profile where relevant.
For local businesses, the aim is not to shove a suburb into every available heading. It is to establish genuine geographic relevance and connect that with the products or services people are searching for.
For businesses covering larger territories, the same thinking applies without turning the website into a deranged list of suburbs. Businesses serving Melbourne, Ballarat, Bendigo, regional Victoria, country Victoria or customers across Australia need a search structure that reflects where they genuinely operate and what people in those markets are looking for.
Technical SEO, Indexing and Google Search Console
There is little point writing excellent content if search engines struggle to crawl, index or interpret the website underneath it. Technical SEO deals with the machinery behind search visibility.
Depending on what the audit uncovers, that might include indexing problems, crawlability, canonical signals, redirects, broken links, duplicate content, XML sitemaps, page hierarchy, structured data and the relationship between the website and Google Search Console.
Page speed, mobile behaviour and other technical SEO issues are considered where they affect the website and search experience. I focus on problems I can meaningfully identify and address rather than manufacturing a frightening list of minor warnings so everybody has something to panic about before lunch.
For smaller technical jobs, troubleshooting or defined pieces of website work that do not require a broader SEO project, Villain for Hire is often the more sensible place to start.
SEO for Shopify Websites
Shopify SEO has many of the same foundations as SEO for any other website, but ecommerce creates its own collection of opportunities and potential messes.
Products, collections, navigation, duplicate or overlapping content, internal links, metadata, images and the relationship between commercial and informational searches all need to make sense. A Shopify store should give search engines clear pathways through the business rather than leaving products floating around in a digital warehouse hoping somebody eventually finds them.
For a new Shopify website, these foundations belong within Website Development from the beginning. For an existing Shopify store, an SEO audit can identify where search visibility is being lost, where content or structure needs attention and where worthwhile organic search opportunities exist.
SEO for Google, ChatGPT and AI Search
Search behaviour is no longer limited to ten blue links on Google. People increasingly ask ChatGPT and other AI systems direct questions about businesses, products, services, destinations and recommendations.
The foundations overlap heavily with good SEO. Clear entities, useful content, logical page relationships, descriptive headings, structured information, relevant geographic signals and a website that plainly explains who the business is, what it does and who it serves all help machines interpret the business.
I therefore build SEO and AI search visibility around clarity rather than trying to sprinkle magical robot dust over a website. Google, AI systems and human visitors all benefit when the site makes bloody good sense.
SEO for New Websites and Existing Websites
Every new Studio Von Terrible website starts with search foundations built into the project. Page planning, search-aware copy, metadata, image optimisation, internal structure, indexing foundations and appropriate technical SEO belong in a properly built website. I do not deliberately remove the useful bits so I have something to sell back later.
The dedicated SEO service is for businesses that need deeper investigation of an existing website, broader keyword and competitor research, an SEO audit, SEO content strategy, a search growth plan or additional implementation beyond the SEO foundations included within a new website build.
If you want to see how website strategy, content, SEO and occasionally some fairly strange business requirements come together in the wild, the Case Files contain examples of Studio Von Terrible projects.
If you are unsure whether you need an SEO audit, implementation work, new search-focused content or a larger website project, explore Work With Me or tell me what Google is doing to annoy you. We will work out which particular form of search villainy belongs on the case.
